December 2007

SHOOTERS RECORD SHEETS

Members are reminded that by the end of December each year those who have nominated the MLAGB as their primary club should have returned their shooters record sheets to Malcolm Seller, the MLAGB Police Liaison Officer.

Failure to do so will result in the FAC issuing Police Force being notified that the members' firearms have not been used in the year, which will further result in a visit from the police to query whether they still have a need for their firearms.

It is the members own responsibility to ensure that their shooting records are up to date and that the Association Police Liaison Officer receives copies before year end. Contact details can be found on the inside front cover.

2007 RAFFLE
Tickets for the popular MLAGB raffle in aid of the Overseas Team Fund (OTF) are now available. With a lack of outside funding the Great Britain teams rely heavily on the income generated by the Raffle, the OTF Auction at Bisley and the fundraising shoots in the spring and autumn at Wedgnock.

Please consider purchasing raffle tickets to support our international shooters who give much of their own time and resources to train for selection and compete in international championships.

Prizes offered this year are:

  • FIRST PRIZE - A fine 14 bore double barrel gun by Joseph Manton and Son. This is a genuine antique so no licence is required to possess, unless of course you do wish to use it. The cash option is £800
  • SECOND PRIZE - A Pedersoli Remington .44 Revolver or a cheque for £300.
  • THIRD PRIZE - A Pedersoli Kentucky Percussion Rifle or a cheque for £175.
  • FOURTH PRIZE - A cheque for £150
  • FIFTH TO TENTH PRIZES - Cheques for £75

Books of tickets should be available at Wedgnock and the Exhibition Hut Bisley, or contact Paul Roberts, MLAGB, PO Box 779, West End, Woking, Surrey GU24 9WA.

The raffle will be drawn at our Autumn Arms Fair at Bisley in November. Thank you for your support!

NATIONAL CLAY PIGEON CHAMPIONSHIPS
The National Clay Pigeon Championships will take place at Wedgnock Shooting Ground on 25 August. With seven events to compete in (including black powder cartridge guns) there is plenty to keep the enthusiast occupied.

There are a great many shot gunners in the Association and we encourage you to come and shoot in the competitions. It is not our intention to make our sporting competitions hard, they are set for the average shooter to obtain his or her average score with perhaps one stand to sort out the better shots. We want you to come and break clays, meet other shooters and give your guns an airing.

August 2007

ENGLISH PISTOL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Held at Wedgnock and on the same weekend as the Short Range Championships (i.e. 25/26 August), the English Pistol Championships follows the standard Muzzle Loading Associations International Committee (MLAIC) competition schedule with events in two categories - O (Original firearms) and R (Replica firearms). SHORT RANGE CHAMIONSHIPS

There is plenty of shooting opportunity with ten 50m events and fourteen 100m events. Competitions include for original and reproduction arms. The 50m competitions include offhand events for matchlock, flintlock and percussion muskets, and military and target rifle. At 100m flintlock, military and target rifles can be shot, and there is also an event for double barrel rifles and a 'three position' match for patched ball rifles. Entrants should note that this is not an 'open' competition but confined to members of the MLAGB. Entry Form.

Wedgnock offers superb facilities for hosting such and event with spacious ranges and covered firing points. Set in the heart of England it is easily accessible from the nearby motorway network.

July 2007

NRA IMPERIAL HISTORIC ARMS MEETING
The NRA's Imperial Historic Arms Meeting is firmly established in the calendar of 'classic arms' shooters. There are many events for muzzle loading rifles and pistols, additionally those with a taste for breech loading rifles have opportunity to air their Sniders, Martini-Henrys, etc. Rifle competitions are fired at 50m, 100m and 200 yards and offer an excellent opportunity for 'club shooters' to try their hand at mid-range shooting. The Event takes place at Bisley on 14/15 July. Further details from: NRA Historic Arms Resource Centre, National Shooting Centre, Bisley Camp, Brookwood, Surrey GU24 OPB.

July 2007

PEDERSOLI CHALLENGE
This MLAGB run open competition is now well established and is generously sponsored by both Davide Pedersoli & Co and Viking Arms Ltd. Make the weekend of 7/8 July a date in your diary - where else in the UK do you get opportunity to compete for prizes of such distinction? This year the prizes to be awarded for aggregate competitions are:

  • One Pedersoli Le Page International .36 Percussion Pistol
  • One Pedersoli Pennsylvania Dixie .32 Flintlock Rifle

Run on the lines of an international match there will be a full program of 25m, 50m and 100m, events catering for matchlock, flintlock and percussion pistol, plus revolvers, and for longarms, matchlock and flintlock musket, flintlock rifle and percussion military and target rifles. Range capacity at Wedgnock is such that all events are self squadded, with the first detail commencing at 10:00am and the last one at 4:00pm each day. Entry forms are distributed to all those that attended the match in the last two years or can be downloaded via the 'Calendar of Events' on the MLAGB web site (at www.mlagb.com). Whilst entries can also be made on the day, advance submission of entry forms is of great assistance to the match organiser. Representatives of Viking Arms will be attending on the Sunday to present the prizes to the winners. Entry Forms: Musket & Rifle - Pistol.

PISTOL FEST 2007
The MLAGB's annull Pistol Fest will be held at Wedgnock Range, Warwick, on the weekend of 12/13 May. With a sixteen competitions for matchlock, flintlock and percussion pistol plus revolvers there is plenty enough shooting to make a weekend of it! So if you want to compete with your original flintlock duelling pistol or your 'Old Army' Ruger there are matches for all. Note that the Pistol Fest is not an open shoot, but confined to MLAGB members.

The OTF Match held in April opened an MLAGB program of pistol competitions running on a regular basis through to the end of season OTF match in October. Along with the Pistol Fest other matches are the National Pistol Championships, Pedersoli Challenge and English Pistol Championships. In addition there are muzzle loading pistol events at the NRA's Phoenix Meeting and Trafalgar Meetings. For the keen pistol shooter there is certainly an abundance of opportunities to compete.

May 2007

NRA OPEN DAYS AT BISLEY
The twice annual Open Days have become an important fixture in the Bisley calendar. The dates this year are the Saturday 5th May and Saturday 8th September. Surrey Branch is keen to provide a static display in the Exhibition Hut on both occasions as well as providing the ever popular muzzle-loading clay shoot. It is worth repeating that these Open Days are vital good publicity for all shooting sports and muzzle-loading in particular! We are lucky to have a hard core of stalwarts prepared to give up their time for these days but more help from any MLAGB member is very welcome. You can help by just being at the event explaining the appeal of our sport, providing a small display in the Hut or helping with the clay shoot. A full day commitment is great but even the offer of just a half day is welcome. Please contact Paul Roberts.

SCHUTZENFEST & NATIONAL 600, 900 & 1000 YARD CHAMPIONSHIPS - NEW DATES
The above events have traditionally been held at Bisley on the end of May Bank Holiday weekend and coinciding with the NRAs 'Phoenix Meeting'. Due to the continuing expansion of the latter event range space cannot now be made available at Bisley for the MLAGB competitions. Failure to be able to accommodate both the short range and long range events on an earlier weekend in May has led to the rescheduling of the entire weekends shooting to 14, 15 and 16 September. Please book these dates in your diaries and continue to support this enjoyable festival of muzzle loading.

The weekend will include the usual full program of events:

  • 14 September: National Free and Military Rifle Championships at 600 yards
  • 15 September: Schutzenfest with 50m and 100m events for musket and rifle
  • 16 September: National Rifle Championships at 900 and 1000 yards

This does however mean that more space will be available on Stickledown Range and the usual crowded 900 and 1000 yard firing points should be avoided.

March 2007

OTF FUNDRAISER MATCH
The dates for the Rifle and Pistol Secretary's popular open matches in aid of the Overseas Team Fund (OTF) are the weekend of 14/15 April. This two day competition at the MLAGB's range complex at Wedgnock, Warwick, has a full program of musket, rifle and pistol events. Coming at the start of the competition season the event offers chance to clear out the cobwebs or evaluate your winter training progress as your fancy dictates!

This is an open competition and as such does not require membership of the MLAGB. New shooters will be welcomed. The spacious range facilities at Wedgnock mean that events can be self squadded, so once the competition targets have been collected form the office the shooter can compete at a time that suits them. The relaxed atmosphere permits an easy introduction for those new to competitive shooting and the weekend is a good way to renew acquaintances and make new ones. As in the past there will be prizes and not medals for the winners. Entry Forms.

The OTF fund exists to contribute towards the substantial costs incurred by shooters who represent Great Britain and the MLAGB in international shooting events. Please support this worthy cause and enjoy a weekend shooting in pleasant company and a friendly atmosphere.

March 2007

March 2007

NATIONAL PISTOL CHAMPIONSHIPS - BISLEY
Please note that due to the AGM being scheduled for 2nd June I have had to cancel the Championships at Bisley. I regret that due to the full calendar the earliest replacement date I could get is Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September on the Melville Range. I hope this will not deter you from entering the competitions and it will give you a chance to attend the AGM and see how your Association functions.

David Spittles, Pistol Secretary

MID & LONG RANGE SHOOTING
Spring sees the commencement of the mid (200-600 yards) and long (900/1000 yards) range match series for military and target rifles at Bisley. Check the events calendar for competition dates and entry forms.

If you shoot 100m rifle events, then you certainly have all the equipment necessary for the mid-range events. Matches for military rifles, typically Enfield's, are held at ranges out to 600 yards. Small-bore (.451) rifles are used at ranges out to 1000 yards (and on occasions 1200 yards). Even if you are a novice at these disciplines do enter the matches. Many friendly and helpful experienced members who can offer advice and encouragement will welcome you.

February 2007

ARMS FAIR
Both collectors and shooters are reminded of the MLAGB arms fair to be held at the Association Club House, the Exhibition Hut, at Bisley on Saturday 10 March. Doors open at 8:30am for dealer set up and to all at 9:30am. There will be a table available free to Association members but the limit is two items only per person. PISTOL & RIFLE SHOOTING AT BISLEY
The MLAGB has a series of range bookings at Bisley throughout the year for both pistol and rifle shooters. Pistol shoots are on Melville and Cheylesmore Ranges and rifle on Short Siberia (at 100m). They are ideal for those who wish to enjoy a relaxed shoot with friends or those competitive spirits who wish to undertake regular training sessions to fine tune their skills. These bookings are made for members and are self funded. Dates appear in the calendar of events.
